Two-stroke jetting for the conditions

Your jetting isn't wrong when the weather changes — it's just tuned for a different day. Here's how temperature, altitude and humidity move the mixture, how to read the signs, and how to make every good run repeatable.

Get the jetting right and a two-stroke pulls clean from the bottom to the top of every gear. Get it wrong and you'll feel it — a bog off idle, a flat spot in the middle, a top end that either signs off early or screams lean. The frustrating part is that the same jetting that was perfect last month can feel off today, without you touching a thing. The bike didn't change. The air did.

What jetting actually controls

Jetting sets the fuel-to-air ratio the carburettor delivers across the throttle range. Four things do most of the work, each owning a slice of the throttle:

  • Pilot / air screw — idle to about a quarter throttle.
  • Needle (clip position & taper) — the big middle, roughly a quarter to three-quarters.
  • Main jet — the top end, wide open.

The mixture you feel on track is the sum of those against the oxygen actually in the air — and that's the part the weather keeps changing.

The four things that move your jetting

It all comes back to air density — how much oxygen is packed into each lungful the engine takes. Denser air carries more oxygen, which leans the mixture, so you richen to match. Thinner air carries less, richening the mixture, so you lean off. Four factors set the density:

Temperature and altitude do the heavy lifting; humidity is a smaller, slower nudge. A cold, dry, sea-level morning is the densest air you'll see — the day you'll want the richest jetting. A hot, humid afternoon up in the hills is the opposite.

Reading the signs

You don't need a lab — the bike tells you. Learn to read it:

  • Spark plug — a light tan / milk-chocolate insulator is happy. Chalky white means lean; black and sooty means rich.
  • Lean signs — hanging idle, pinging or knock under load, a top end that runs hot or seizes. Lean is the dangerous direction; when in doubt, err rich.
  • Rich signs — a bog or blubber off the bottom, a wet pipe, fouled plugs, four-stroking that won't clean out.
Safety first

A lean two-stroke makes more heat and can hole a piston. If the engine is pinging or running hot, stop and richen before you ride on. Any jetting chart is a starting point — always confirm with a plug check and how the bike actually feels.

A method you can repeat

Chasing jetting by memory is how you go in circles. Work it like a test, not a guess:

  • Start from a known-good baseline — a setup that ran well, and the conditions it ran in.
  • Change one thing at a time — one clip position, or one main-jet size. Change two and you've learned nothing.
  • Test the same way — same section of track, same gear, back to back.
  • Write it down — the change, the result, and the conditions you ran it in. That last part is the one everyone forgets, and it's the one that makes the note useful next time.

Do that a few times and you stop starting from scratch. You build a table of "this jetting, in this air" — and next time the forecast looks familiar, you already know where to begin.
